REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR FREE COLLEGE COURSE!
Oakland-area adults who face barriers to higher education are invited to apply to the Clemente College Experience, a free college course in the humanities operating in partnership with Oakland Adult and Career Education and the Oakland Public Library.
The program provides an opportunity for students to explore issues of community, culture, and civic participation through courses in literature, art history, U.S. history, and critical thinking and writing, along with field trips to museums and local theater. The course is offered free of charge to participants, with free childcare and transportation assistance as needed. Transferable college credit is available from Bard College. GED or other prerequisites not required.
Classes begin January 21, 2025 and meet on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 5:30 to 7:30 pm at the Oakland Public Library Main Branch, 125 14th St, until mid-May.
Here’s what two of our Oakland Clemente students had to say about their experiences:
“Joining the Clemente family was one of the best decisions I ever made! So many times in my life I had to make the hard choice of either pursuing higher education or working- life never allowed me to do both. Clemente’s classes were approachable, convenient, and engaging. The instructors were as compassionate as they were knowledgeable. For the first time, I could combine furthering my education as well as making a living. Clemente helped me find my agency as a student and create a lifelong learner.” — Sheree Murphy
“I took two semesters of the Clemente Course, and I found it extremely useful and educational for my academic purposes. English is my second language, and I was hesitant to join the class, but it actually helped me improve my English skills. The supportive environment and interactive discussions played a crucial role in building my confidence. Additionally, this class changed my view of history, taught me about multiple topics, and developed my critical thinking.” — Carolina Perez
